چکیده

The thermospheric temperatures from low and equatorial latitudes during geomagnetically disturbed periods are known to exhibit signi®cant deviations from atmospheric model predictions. Also, the oscillatory features seen in the observations are not accounted for by the models. A simple relation has been established between the di€erence in the observed and modelpredicted temperatures and the rate of change of Dst, the magnetic index representing the ring current variabilities. Using this relation, a correction term has been added to the latest MSIS-90 model algorithm and almost all the observed variations in neutral temperatures spectroscopically determined from Mt.Abu, a lowlatitude station in India, are successfully reproduced for two moderate geomagnetic storms.

Thermospheric mass density variations during geomagnetic storms and a prediction model based on the merging electric field

With the help of four years (2002–2005) of CHAMP accelerometer data we have investigated the dependence of low and mid latitude thermospheric density on the merging electric field, Em, during major magnetic storms. Altogether 30 intensive storm events (Dstmin <−100 nT) are chosen for a statistical study. In order to achieve a good correlation Em is preconditioned. Contrary to general opinion, E...

A COMPARISON OF WIND OBSERVATIONS OF THE UPPER THERMOSPHERE FROM THE DYNAMIClS EXPLORER SATELLITE WITH THE PREDICTIONS OF A GLOBAL TIME-DEPENDENT MODEL

Seven polar passes of the NASA ~y~arnics Enpiorer 2 (DE-2) satellite during October and early December 1981 have been used to examine the high-latitude circulation in the upper thermosphere. Vector winds along the satellite track are derived by appropriate merging of thedata from the remote-sensing FabryPerotinterferometer(meridiona1 wind)and the insitu wind andtemperaturespectrometer(zona1 win...

Comparison Of Atmospheric Density Models in the Thermospheric Region: MSIS-86 and DTM-78

The German Satellite CHAMP (Challenging Minisatellite Payload) has the unique ability to measure the surface forces present. The total density can be easily derived from this measurement, with the help of models of solar radiation pressure and Earth’s albedo. This total density will be compared with the total density from two models, MSIS-86 (Hedin, 1987) and DTM-78 (Barlier et al., 1977). The ...

Thermosphere and Ionosphere Dynamics during 20-30 March 1979 Time Period: Comparison of Tigcm Calculated Densities with Observations

The Thermosphere Ionosphere General Circulation Model developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, (NCAR TIGcM), has been used to simulate the time—dependent variations of global thermosphere and ionosphere structure and dynamics during the 20-30 March 1979 time period. Therinospheric density variations predicted by the TIGCM during this period are statistically compared to satell...
